Our bride wanted to incorporate the damask pattern that was used throughout her wedding, on her cake, so we chose to represent the full pattern on the bottom tier and use variations of the pattern for the top three tiers to mix it up a bit.

This cake had a very unique design to it. This was our first time trying the wrinkle look and if you ask me it turned out really cool. You could do the wrinkles in any color that you choose as well as the fondant under the wrinkles.

Chocolate Fondant was used to make this wrinkled cascade.

This cake would be perfect for any season!

Tiffany and Tyler were married this past June. Tiffany brought us a neat idea of how she wanted to hang her cake. I can honestly say we have never had anyone that wanted to hang their cake, but we are willing to try anything at least once. Here is how it turned out {really cute idea if you ask me}.

On their wedding day Tiffany had some candles and sheer fabric sitting under her cake. Someone had accidentally bumped the fabric and it caught on fire. The whole table was flaming. Good thing she decided to hang her cake, because there was no damage!

Remember back in high school when you were assigned a book report? Well when your mom is a cake decorator it's only natural to have a cake for your book report...haha. My son Riley read the book To Kill a Mockingbird and this is what we came up with.

Riley and I had a fun time making this cake together. Riley helped me roll the fondant and make the characters in the book. It was fun to hear how Riley imagined the characters!

This past week I was able to visit my Grandma who turned 90 years old. I was able to provide the birthday cake and it turned out darling. I would have to say this is my current favorite cake.

Cake Features

1. The shoe boxes were made of fondant with delicious chocolate cake underneath.

2. The frames are handmade from Chocolate. Each frame was also hand painted! Unfortunately the pictures weren't edible, but we do have a machine that can create edible photos.

3. The chocolate buttons added a little bling. These were also handmade and painted.

Touching Story

This couple was so much fun to work with. The colors of their wedding were red, blue, black, and white which made the cake fun and bright. The use of bold designs and angles made this cake as unique as the couple that came up with the idea.

The cake topper was also a fun way to show the personality of this couple. When they came to their consultation they shared why they wanted a motorcycle as their cake topper. The story goes as follows:

Our bride and groom went on their first date on a motorcycle, where they were hit head on by on coming traffic. Both were rushed to the hospital and put into the intensive care unit. Neither were expected to live through the night but in the morning they were both going strong. Throughout their experience they learned that you can NEVER take life too seriously. Hence the use of the fun and bold reception decor.

I think this cake was a smashing hit! Thanks or letting us be apart of your special day.

Caybree and Kyler Johnson

The Johnson's cake was one of our favorite cakes of the season. The use of the sash and brooch tied in the theme of their wedding perfectly. Dawna piped flowers out of butter cream on the second and fourth layers of the cake. This gave the cake a more unique and playful look.

Caybree's mom used satin to make the sashes. This helped get the perfect color that Caybree was looking for. Caybree wanted her cake to match her dress. The brooches were very similar and the piping on the cake matched her dress design.

We loved the idea of match the dress and the cake. Recently this has been a new trend.

The Royal Wedding Cake

The eight-tiered Royal Wedding Cake was decorated with over 900 sugar-paste flowers.

Ms Cairns, 56, whose confections are sold in Harrods, Selfridges and Waitrose, was contacted by St James's Palace in February and asked if she would make William and Kate's wedding cake.

Speaking at Buckingham Palace after she had put the final touches to the cake, she said: ‘The picture gallery has high ceilings and is an imposing room so I wanted the cake to have presence but not to be imposing and I think it worked.

‘Catherine did not want it to be seven feet tall, she didn't want it to be towering and thin, and I think we succeeded.

‘We reflected some of the architectural details in the room so the garlands on the walls were reproduced loosely on the fourth tier - we've used roses, acorns, ivy leaves, apple blossom and bridal rose.’

The bride wanted elements from the Joseph Lambeth technique of cake decoration, where intricate piping is used to make three dimensional scroll work, leaves, flowers and other adornments.

Kate also gave Ms Cairns detailed instructions for her to include 17 different blooms and foliage for their meaning or symbolism - known as the ‘language of flowers’.

Her cute bunny cupcakes were made with almond shavings, marshmallows, candy, and sprinkles.

This chocolate cake looks delicious. Cydney used vanilla cupcakes at the base and then covered her chocolate frosting with M&M's.

Congratulations to Johanna and Bryson, this year's winning couple of the Allyse's Bridal $50,000 wedding giveaway.

We are so excited to begin working with Johanna and Bryson on their wedding plans. They are planning to have a September Wedding which will be beautiful.

We made mini cupcakes for our booth this year. Everyone loved them especially all of the groom's. We featured our chocolate, yellow, and vanilla cake flavors...yummy!

This was our booth at the Allyse's Bridal $50,000.00 wedding giveaway.

We decided to try something new and different for this event. A lot of brides loved this cake and we got many wonderful compliments. Thank you everyone.

Brides are reclaiming white. An all white wedding is a timeless look and will never be looked upon with doubt. White is an everlasting color for weddings and the color white can be incorporated into just about any aspect of a wedding.

White is a wonderful color for both summer and winter weddings. Indoor events can benefit from a color palette of whites and ivory creams. Some pale hints of blue, pink, or peach can also appear for a touch of color. However, only white is perfect for summer days. Outdoor settings with white tents and grassy carpets can only be done justice with a bright white color palette. Bright white can actually bring elegance and formality to even the most casual events.

Frosting

Wedding Cakes by Dawna offers both fondant and buttercream frosting. Typically, if a bride likes a fondant cake, that we have done, we can recreate it using buttercream and vice versa. We use buttercream to cover all of our cake tiers and then roll high quality fondant about an 1/8″ thin and cover the cake. Using this method we believe we get the best of both worlds…not only do we get a great taste from the buttercream but we also get a perfect designer’s canvas with the fondant.

Fondant Pros

- Fondant is a great option during the warmer summer months because it keeps your cake cooler.

-Fondant gives us the ability to do basically anything on a cake, from hand painting to intricate sugar jewels and that is just something that buttercream by itself can’t do.

-Fondant is easier to transport.

Buttercream Pros

-Hands down buttercream is the better tasting of the two frosting's.

-Buttercream cakes are generally less expensive than fondant.

-It is much easier to add designs to your wedding cake with buttercream frosting.

Shown below are two similar cakes, the difference is that the first cake is made in fondant and the second one is made with buttercream.

Funny Story

One year Anniversary

A few weeks ago, we received a call from a frantic man that we had done business with about a year ago. This man's one year anniversary was just around the corner! His wife had expressed that she would like to eat the top layer of their cake on their anniversary (this is a very normal tradition) and this man went into panic mode. He didn't realize that it was tradition to freeze and then eat the top layer of your wedding cake, on your anniversary, so a few weeks after their wedding he tossed it in the trash. He called Dawna and explained what happened and luckily she was able to locate his file and see exactly what cake his wife had ordered. This man had asked that Dawna make a new cake that resembled their wedding cake so that he could take it home and freeze it (talk about a smart husband). Dawna was able to recreate their top layer and get it to the frantic husband just in time for their anniversary. We never found out if the husband told his wife what he did, but if you ask me she never needs to know!

Using a Brooch

The use of brooches is really popular in the wedding industry right now. We have seen brides use brooches in their bouquets, on their wedding dress, and even on picture frames. It would only be natural for the trend to carry over into the cake world. Using a brooch is the perfect way to give your wedding cake a unique look. Whether your going for a vintage, playful, themed, or classic look of your wedding, there is a brooch for you.

These are our recent creations using Brooches

This bride used pearls throughout her entire reception. She wanted to incorporate pearls into her cake while keeping a very classic look.We found 3 pearl brooches at Forever 21 that helped incorporate pearls as well as keep the classic look of her cake.

This bride had a more playful look to her wedding. Her wedding dress had a blue sash pinned together with a diamond brooch. She wanted her cake to resemble her dress and I think it turned out adorable. This brooch was purchased at Macy's.

Our bride wanted a very vintage/elegant feel to her wedding. She incorporated diamonds and pearls into the look of her reception as well as a rustic gold. We found the perfect brooches for her at Forever 21. The brooches helped pull the look of the reception into the cake along with the height and intricate detail.
